We all love to doodle. But have you ever put pen, pencil or paintbrush to paper in a bid to raise cash creatively for charity? If you haven’t, then pop along to theDesk co-working and events space in Sai Ying Pun on Saturday February 25 between 12midday and 5pm and take part in a special 1000 Drawings event. And if you have? Come along too.
The 1000 Drawings movement began a decade ago in Johannesburg, South Africa, and has spread across the world ever since, being held regularly in places like Munich, Germany, and Tuscany, Italy. It basically involves a series of events across different spaces in a city or area where participants, from any walk of life, doodle, draw, paint, photograph and even collage over a few hours in order to create an A5-sized artwork by the end of the event. In fact, that’s the only rule: you have to finish up with an A5 piece which is then hung on a washing line next to all the other pieces that have been created by participants that day.
Novices come along and so do professionals. All ages, backgrounds and talents are represented at these events. And the series always culminates in a big charity arts bash where the pieces that have been created over the previous weeks are auctioned off for charity. There’s a huge emphasis on fun, creativity and socialising, with the bonus being that it’s all done in the name of charity and helping people who are in need.
The new Hong Kong arm of 1000 Drawings launched a few months ago and, at the turn of this year, the group’s series of events began, some in city venues and some out on the streets. So far, more than 500 works of art have been created, all of which be up for auction at the final bash, called The Night of 1000 Drawings, at The Hive Central on Saturday April 1. The entire charity drive supports the Love 21 Foundation, which is dedicated to bettering the lives of people who are living with Down Syndrome and autism in Hong Kong through physical activity and nutrition.
Philippa Ho and Christine Wong, who own Kalacove, an abstract pattern and textiles brand in Hong Kong, are the co-organisers of 1000 Drawings Hong Kong. They say the special event at theDesk on February 25 has the theme of ‘Chinese zodiacs’ to toast the Year of the Rooster. Wong says: “Like our recent Valentine’s event with Draw By Night HK, we’ve found that having a theme helps to get people’s creative juices flowing, so with the Chinese New Year theme at theDesk, we encourage doodlers to explore zodiac signs both visually and metaphorically. Of course, participants can create artworks of any kind. Maybe the Year of the Cock is just a fun place to start!”
Ho says: “1000 Drawings is an empowerment project that uses art to engage with and mobilise people to raise funds for charity. It tours different venues, so we’re really pleased that we can host an event at
For anyone who can’t make theDesk event or, indeed, any of 1000 Drawings Hong Kong’s run-up events, they can still submit A5-sized artworks to the team at 1000 Drawings HK, Urban Serviced Offices, 4/F, Asia Standard Tower, 59-65 Queen’s Road Central, Central, Hong Kong. Both local and international submissions are being welcomed by the team. But do come along to the event if you want to have fun and flex your artistic muscles. You can come along at any time but do be there for the end at 5pm, when all of the works are hung up like lines of laundry for everyone to check out. Also, the guys from Print House, based in Wong Chuk Hang, are coming to the event and they can print your artwork on a T-shirt as a custom order. So, go on and become an artist. Doodle for a difference!
